What Is Aerial Yoga?

Aerial yoga uses a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling to support your body in poses that would be impossible — or uncomfortable — on a mat. The hammock acts as a prop, taking pressure off your joints, helping you find deeper alignment, and letting you experience true spinal decompression. Whether you are brand new to movement or a seasoned yogi, aerial yoga meets you exactly where you are.

Beginner Aerial

New to aerial yoga? This is your starting point. You will learn how to get in and out of the hammock safely, build trust with the fabric, and explore foundational poses — all at a calm, supportive pace. No experience, no flexibility, and no special strength required.

Perfect for: Complete beginners, those returning after a break, or anyone who has ever been curious but hesitant.

Why Aerial Yoga Works

The hammock changes everything. By partially suspending your body weight, it removes the compression that makes many poses inaccessible on the floor — and opens up a whole new dimension of movement.

  • Spinal decompression — gentle traction relieves tension in the back and neck
  • Deeper stretches — gravity assists flexibility without forcing it
  • Core activation — every movement requires your core to stabilise, building strength naturally
  • Joint mobility — the hammock supports joints through their full range of motion safely
  • Stress relief — inversions and supported poses calm the nervous system
  • Playfulness — you will feel like a child again, and that matters more than you think

Before & After Aerial Yoga

Before you start: Your spine carries the weight of every desk hour, every commute, every sleepless night. Your back feels compressed, your shoulders are tight, and your core — though you may not realise it — has quietly switched off. Flexibility feels like something other people have.

  • Compressed spine — daily gravity and sitting take a toll on your discs and posture
  • Limited mobility — joints feel stiff, range of motion restricted
  • Weak core — stabilising muscles are underused and disengaged
  • Chronic tension — neck, shoulders, and lower back carry constant tightness
  • Low body confidence — movement feels effortful rather than joyful

After starting aerial yoga: The hammock begins to undo what gravity has done. Week by week, your body opens up, strengthens, and finds ease it had forgotten.

  • Decompressed spine — gentle traction creates space between vertebrae, relieving back and neck pain
  • Greater flexibility — gravity-assisted stretching takes you deeper without forcing it
  • Real core strength — every session activates stabilising muscles you rarely reach on a mat
  • Released tension — inversions calm the nervous system and melt chronic tightness
  • Confidence and joy — you move with ease, play with your body, and feel genuinely good

You do not need to be ready. You just need to begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Aerial yoga is designed to build strength and flexibility over time — not require it upfront. The hammock supports your body weight, so you work with gravity rather than against it. Our beginner classes start from zero and progress at a pace that feels safe and achievable.
Safety is our top priority. The hammocks are rigged to support many times your body weight and are inspected regularly. In beginner classes, the hammock stays low to the ground so you are never far from the floor. Our instructors are trained in safe aerial technique and will guide you through every movement step by step.
Wear fitted, comfortable activewear that covers your underarms and the backs of your knees — this prevents the fabric from pinching your skin. Avoid tops with zips or metal hardware. You will practice barefoot, so no special footwear is needed.
Beginner Aerial introduces you to the hammock and foundational poses — it is your entry point with no prior knowledge assumed. Aerial Conditioning builds on those basics with more dynamic sequences designed to improve your fitness and coordination. We recommend completing at least a few beginner classes before moving into conditioning.
The hammock creates resistance and support simultaneously. When you push against or hold the fabric, you engage muscles you rarely use on a flat mat. At the same time, the support allows your joints to move through a wider range of motion than they might otherwise, improving flexibility safely and progressively.
Aerial yoga is not recommended if you are pregnant, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma, recent surgery, or severe vertigo. If you have any health concerns, please consult your doctor before attending and let us know when you book so we can advise you appropriately.
We keep our classes small — typically 6 to 10 students — so that every participant receives personal attention and can progress safely. This also means spaces fill up quickly, so we recommend booking in advance.
